Erasmus Reveals Feeling In Star-Studded Sundowns Squad

Mamelodi Sundowns forward Kermit Erasmus has opened up on what it’s like to be in a star-studded squad with fierce competition when travelling around the continent.

Ahead of their CAF Champions League quarter-final first-leg against Petro de Luanda, some of the fringe players in the Masandawana squad have enjoyed more minutes in the first team.

The likes of George Maluleka, Gaston Sirino, Aubrey Modiba and Erasmus himself have played crucial roles in both the league and Nedbank Cup action and the 31-year-old has now opened up on what it’s like to be on the road with the talented crop of players as they look to secure quadruple.

“Camp is always interesting. I mean, it’s something I look forward to, to being part of and the camaraderie in the team, the brotherhood is amazing,” he told the club’s media department.

“We can only go from strength to strength from here in the games we’ve been playing and that’s coming up. It’s shown in the past games that we’ve been sticking together and we’ve been fighting for one another and we’ve been working hard and sticking as a unit I mean.

“At the end of the day, the team wins games and without one another, where we are at the moment wouldn’t be possible. So as a collective, I think we’re much more powerful and a force to be reckoned with. So we looking forward to the games coming up and enjoying camp as it comes.”

With 34 players registered in the first-team this season, Erasmus, like many others, has exercised patience for his chance with the Brazilians competing on all fronts but keeping morale high has been a major challenge, something coach Manqoba Mngqithi admits has been a collective effort.

“It’s very difficult, but one must appreciate the leadership we have in the team from the top to the technical team, management and everyone,” Mngqithi said last week before their game against Summerfield Dynamos.

“Everybody is involved to make sure those ones who need a pat on the back, they always get it to say your time is coming, you will get an opportunity and for whatever reason, with God’s grace, we’ve managed to play almost everyone in our squad this season.

“This augurs very well for everyone to believe that the coaches have the best interest for all of us at heart – so based on that we’re fortunate because the games has forced us to not concentrate on 18, 19 players – and leave other players on the side.

“So everyone has had to make a contribution to the team, probably on the youngsters have not participated in that space.”

Erasmus has made 15 appearances in all competitions this season, starting six of them and has netted three goals.
