Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) workers at KwaZulu-Natal’s Inkosi Langalibalele municipality are angry after their contracts ended four months early.
An anonymous worker said they got termination letters on 2 September. Their six-month jobs, which started in July, were meant to last until the end of December.
“The letter indicated that Inkosi Langalibalele municipality did not comply with the EPWP recruitment guidelines,” the employee said.
The letter doesn’t say if they’ll be rehired or if new workers will be brought in.
Workers also didn’t get their R2,235 September pay. When they spoke to municipal manager Sthembiso Mthembu, he said he couldn’t help.
“The manager said there is nothing he can do because Mayor Sobholenyoni Mduduzi Myeza has employed 98 of his people,” the worker claimed.
In June, 24 councillors were told to hire 15 people per ward. But hiring was uneven, with some wards getting no jobs and others five to 10.
The employee said the mayor plans to hire 98 people he knows, including relatives and 30 others.
Mthembu didn’t answer calls or respond to Scrolla.Africa’s messages by publication time.
