Two of South Africa’s most prominent entertainers, actor John Kani and the legendary prankster Leon Schuster, will soon be honoured for their years of service at the upcoming National Film and Television Awards.

John has been in the performing arts industry for decades. After making multiple appearances in films like Sarafina, Endgame, Black Panther, and, more recently, a spin-off of the Lion King film, called Mufasa, the 82-year-old will soon be honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

The award is given in recognition of his work as an actor and his impact as a cultural icon on the global stage.

In August this year, the veteran actor received an invitation to join the Oscars voting body. During his appearance on Radio 702, he explained that the opportunity was both an honour and a privilege. He also expressed that it was his chance to bring Africa into the room.

“It is about time our presence is felt in the room,” he added.

Schucks gets a nod

Meanwhile, the upcoming National Film and Television Awards will also honour another one of South Africa’s living legends – Leon Schuster.

Leon, known for his comedic nature and films like There’s a Zulu on my Stoep, Mr Bones, and Mama Jack, will be recognised alongside his collaborator Alfred Ntombela, where he is set to receive an Outstanding Contribution to Film and TV Award.

After initially being hosted in places like the United Kingdom and the United States, the event has branched out to South Africa and will take place for the third time on local soil.

It takes place on 22 November at the South African State Theatre.
