Award-winning rapper Mthebeni Ndevu, better known as Emtee, was released on R1,000 bail after spending the night in police custody.
The musician appeared in the Midrand Magistrate’s Court on charges linked to the alleged contravention of a protection order obtained by his estranged wife, Nicole Chinsamy, in 2023.
The order allegedly bars Emtee from verbally abusing Chinsamy and from harassing her through social media platforms.
A number of supporters packed the courtroom, including fellow artist Sjava, relatives and members of his management team.
Under the conditions of his release, Emtee is prohibited from posting any content relating to Chinsamy on social media, whether directly or indirectly. He has also been instructed not to contact her and to immediately remove any existing posts concerning her.
The court warned that failure to comply with these conditions could result in his arrest and detention.
A source familiar with the matter alleged that the rapper voluntarily handed himself over to police at the Midrand Police Station on Wednesday before being formally charged.
The arrest reportedly stems from an incident on June 4, when Emtee allegedly arrived unannounced at Chinsamy’s Midrand residence.
According to sources, Chinsamy was bathing their daughter when the rapper allegedly entered the house and took hold of a knife from the kitchen. Their two other children were reportedly at school at the time.
A source further claimed that Emtee threatened to assault Chinsamy’s brother and make life difficult for her family.
The court appearance follows a recent personal transformation by the Peasrl Thuso hitmaker, who cut off his trademark dreadlocks and publicly reflected on a new chapter in his life.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Emtee thanked his parents, siblings and loyal supporters for standing by him during difficult times.
“Your love, prayers, encouragement, and unwavering loyalty mean more than words can express,” he said.
He described the haircut as a symbol of personal growth and renewal, saying it marked a fresh beginning and a renewed commitment to his future.
“This moment marks a fresh start, renewed focus, and a commitment to moving forward with purpose and determination,” the statement read.
Emtee and his estranged wife have frequently aired allegations against one another on social media, with both sharing images that allegedly showed injuries and damage to property during the course of their turbulent relationship.
Emtee filed for divorce in April 2023 and moved out of the apartment he shared with Chinsamy, relocating to a friend’s home in Fourways. However, the couple later reconciled and welcomed a third child together.
Earlier this year, in February, the rapper once again moved out and secured his own residence.
The matter has been postponed and Emtee is expected back in court on July 13.
