An elderly woman has been killed and several others injured after they were caught in the crossfire during a shooting in Westbury.
The incident took place on Thursday in the south of Johannesburg, leaving one person dead and four others injured, including a 15-month-old infant.
Westbury is one of Johannesburg’s communities that has long struggled with gang-related violence, with residents often caught in the crossfire during shootings.
The motive behind the attack remains unclear and is currently under investigation. However, according to Dimakatso Nevhuluhuwi, spokesperson for the South African Police Service in Gauteng, a group of people was attacked by unknown gunmen.
“All five victims sustained gunshot wounds. One of them, an adult female, was declared dead by emergency personnel on arrival at the hospital. A 15-month-old baby is among those injured,” said Nevhuluhuwi.
Police have opened a case of murder and four counts of attempted murder as investigations continue.
