  • Brigadier Julius Mkhwanazi, Ekurhuleni’s Deputy Police Chief, survived a motion of no confidence after a tense council meeting collapsed.
  • He faces corruption allegations, including unlawfully equipping private vehicles, some linked to alleged crime figure Vusi “Cat” Matlala, with police blue lights.
  • Mkhwanazi has been placed on special leave while investigations continue.

The Deputy Police Chief in the City of Ekurhuleni, Brigadier Julius Mkhwanazi, has survived a motion of no confidence brought against him.

A heated council meeting debating the motion on Thursday evening collapsed before a decision could be reached.

Some political parties are calling for his suspension as a precautionary measure following corruption allegations made by General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.

Brigadier Mkhwanazi was implicated in unlawfully authorising the installation of blue lights on private vehicles, including those allegedly linked to underworld figure Vusi “Cat” Matlala.

Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza told the meeting that the council was not the appropriate platform to discuss Mkhwanazi’s employment status, as he is considered a junior officer.

Mkhwanazi has since been placed on special leave pending further investigations.
