Egypt face defending champions Argentina in blockbuster World Cup last-16 showdown

Africa’s last remaining hope, Egypt, will face South American giants and defending FIFA World Cup champions Argentina in a mouth-watering Round of 16 clash at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on Tuesday evening (kickoff at 6pm SA time), with a place in the quarter-finals at stake. Argentina enter the encounter as favourites, but the Pharaohs have already proved they can compete with the world’s best and will be determined to continue their remarkable campaign.

Egypt are the only African nation still alive in the tournament after Morocco’s earlier qualification to the quarter-finals, and millions across the continent will once again rally behind Mohamed Salah and his teammates as they attempt to cause one of the biggest upsets of the competition.

The Pharaohs reached the knockout stages after an impressive group-stage campaign. They showed resilience and tactical discipline throughout their Group G matches, finishing behind Belgium but ahead of Iran and New Zealand to book a place in the Round of 32.

In the Round of 32, Egypt produced one of their finest World Cup performances, holding Australia to a 1-1 draw through 120 minutes before triumphing 4-2 on penalties. Goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy emerged as the hero during the shootout, while Mohamed Salah led by example with another influential display as Egypt reached the last 16 for the first time in their history.

Argentina, meanwhile, have looked every bit the defending champions despite a few nervous moments. Lionel Scaloni’s side topped Group J ahead of Algeria, Austria, and Jordan, displaying their trademark balance between attacking brilliance and defensive organisation.

However, the Albiceleste were given a major scare in the Round of 32 when they edged Cape Verde 3-2 in a thrilling contest. The African debutants pushed Argentina all the way before Lionel Messi inspired the South Americans to victory and another place in the last 16. The difficult encounter served as a reminder that every knockout match demands complete concentration.

Historically, Argentina are among the most successful football nations in the world. They have won the FIFA World Cup three times (1978, 1986 and 2022) and have also lifted the Copa América a record 16 times, making them South America’s most decorated national team.

Egypt are Africa’s most successful national side, having won the Africa Cup of Nations a record seven times. Although they have never progressed beyond the World Cup group stage before this tournament, their performances in the United States, Canada, and Mexico have shown that they are capable of competing with football’s elite.

The spotlight will inevitably fall on two of the greatest players of their generation.

Argentina captain Lionel Messi continues to produce moments of magic and remains the heartbeat of his team’s attack. Supported by Julián Álvarez, Lautaro Martínez, Rodrigo De Paul and Alexis Mac Allister, Argentina possesses one of the most dangerous attacking units in the tournament.

Egypt will once again pin their hopes on captain Mohamed Salah, whose pace, creativity, and experience have inspired the Pharaohs throughout the competition. Omar Marmoush provides another major attacking threat, while Mahmoud Trezeguet and goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy will also have crucial roles to play if Egypt are to spring a surprise.

With Argentina chasing back-to-back World Cup titles and Egypt carrying the hopes of an entire continent, all the ingredients are in place for a fascinating contest. The winners will advance to the quarter-finals, while the losers will see their dream of lifting football’s biggest prize come to an end.
