Nkuleko Dunga, Gauteng EFF chairperson, survived an attempted assassination at his home early on Wednesday morning.

His family was asleep when they heard footsteps on the roof around midnight.

At 2am, armed intruders on the roof opened fire on security guards who were checking the property.

The EFF said in a statement that the guards fired back, engaging at least three shooters before eight heavily armed attackers fled by jumping over the security wall.

EFF spokesperson Leigh-Ann Mathys said the assailants had waited for two hours, preparing to carry out a planned attack on Dunga.

“Fortunately, no lives were lost, but the gravity of this ambush cannot be understated,” she said.

“This was a deliberate, well-planned attempt on the life of a provincial leader. It is part of a disturbing and growing trend of violence targeting political figures and whistle-blowers across the country.”
