Overseas interest in Percy Tau continues to swell, with a Dutch side the latest to enter the race for the forward’s signature.
Tau has been in sensational form after overcoming the injury woes that beset his Al Ahly career.
He has been instrumental in Ahly’s CAF Champions League journey, scoring four goals in four matches. At the end of the season, Tau will have one more year on his contract with the Egyptian Premier League giants.
INTEREST IN PERCY TAU
He joined them in the 2021/22 season on a three-year deal that expires at the end of next season. With interest in the Bafana Bafana forward swelling, the Cairo giants have reportedly offered him a new contract to fend off interest from Europe.
His return to form has also caught the eye of Burnley FC manager Vincent Kompany.
The two worked together at Anderlecht, although it was a brief spell. Kompany has guided Burnley back to the English Premier League and will be looking to reinforce his squad.
A source close to the 28-year-old has revealed “firm interest from the Eredivisie”.
“FC Utrecht has made contact with his management just to gauge if there’s interest from the player. The only challenge is that Al Ahly is extremely happy with him and unwilling to sell him,” the source said.
“He’s yet to sign a new deal with Ahly and will probably move after AFCON. By then, he’ll be left with six months on his contract.
However, Ahly is expected to push to tie him down to a new contract as soon as possible.
His former club in Belgium, Anderlecht, are also following the situation. Danish giants Brøndby IF and Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal are also linked with the former Mamelodi Sundowns man.
During the January transfer window, Sundowns tried signing Tau, but Ahly reportedly refused.
WHAT RULANI MOKWENA SAID ON PERCY TAU
In March, Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena said Tau “knows exactly what I think”. This was after Sundowns handed Ahly a 5-2 drubbing.
“Before the end of the game, I whispered it [to him], and he waited in the tunnel after the game. “He is an incredible human being. When he is in South Africa, he comes to my house, and the first thing he does is take his hat off.
“I am talking about a Bafana international who has played UEFA Champions League and the English Premier League. The first sign is respect, and good football players have that thing of being good humans.
“But I don’t want to speak too much about Percy because he is not a Sundowns player, and I am very biased. I focus on my players and am very grateful for the opportunity and blessing to be their coach. Every single one of them has this honesty about them.”
