Durban Police Launch Operation Targeting Undocumented Foreign Nationals
A major law enforcement operation targeting undocumented foreign nationals is underway in Durban’s Point precinct, where police have closed several streets and are conducting stop-and-search operations. Immigration officials from the Department of Home Affairs are verifying the legal status of foreign nationals suspected of being in the country unlawfully.
Authorities say several businesses have been shut down after operators were allegedly found to be trading without the required permits or to be in South Africa illegally. Police have also confirmed arrests for drug possession during the operation.
The operation forms part of routine crime-prevention efforts and comes a day before planned nationwide anti-illegal immigration marches, with police saying it is also intended to ensure a safe and secure environment for lawful public demonstrations on 30 June.
