Dumi Mkokstad slams KZN artists for losing passion
Gospel star Dumi Mkokstad has voiced his frustration over what he believes is a decline in the hunger and drive among artists from KwaZulu-Natal.
Reflecting on the state of the industry in his home province, the Mbize hitmaker said it saddens him to see how much things have changed.
“When you are looking for artists, people usually start in KZN because we were working hard and doing well in every style of music. It’s sad now.”
“I was thinking of what happened to some of the most amazing artists we had in KZN. I was just concerned. I wonder what we need to do to bring back what we had,” he shared.
Mkokstad, who recently marked 25 years in the industry, believes one of the reasons behind the decline may be linked to government support, explaining that while it helped in many ways, it also shifted the energy that once drove artists to push harder when opportunities were scarce.
“Our artists in KZN are no longer visible. We don’t see them at the top anymore. Some who used to dominate now only perform their old songs at events. We should try to focus on our work,” he said.
Despite his strong words, the award-winning singer made it clear that his comments were not meant to tear anyone down.
“I’m sorry if my words upset anyone. I meant well and never wanted to put anyone down. My goal was to encourage us, as KZN singers, to step up in the music scene.”
“Things have changed, so let’s work harder, get more creative, and support the new artists coming up,” he added, also paying tribute to the late Dr S.D. Gumbi.
