A devastating double accident on the N1 near Bela-Bela, Limpopo, has claimed the lives of an entire family.
On Saturday, 9 May, a woman and her baby were killed after being struck by the official vehicle transporting Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi.
The tragedy began when the woman’s husband was allegedly knocked down and killed by a car driven by an off-duty police officer.
In a desperate attempt to reach the scene of the first crash, the woman tried to cross the motorway with two children, one of whom was strapped to her back.
It was then that they were hit by the Minister’s state vehicle, driven by a Protection Security Services (PSS) member.
Both the mother and the infant sustained fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene.
While the condition of the second child remains undisclosed, the Minister, his driver, and his protection officer reportedly stopped immediately and remained with the victims until emergency services arrived.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has now taken over the case, as both drivers involved in the separate collisions are members of the South African Police Service (SAPS).
Two files of culpable homicide have been opened to investigate the exact circumstances surrounding this sequence of fatal events.
