Rain, goals, red cards, the final match day of the season was full of drama, as Baroka were relegated, while Kaizer Chiefs’ CAF football hopes ended.

Amakhosi drew 2-2 with Swallows, which meant they finished the season in fourth place, if not lower, with Royal AM and Orlando Pirates still having games in hand.

As a consequence, Chiefs cannot qualify for CAF inter club competition anymore, while Swallows finished in 15th place and will go into the playoffs.

Meanwhile, Baroka’s 1-0 defeat at Maritzburg meant the Limpopo-based side will go down to the GladAfrica Championship.

Also on Saturday, Stellenbosch FC climbed above Chiefs and Royal AM into third spot after handing Cape Town City their first league defeat in 2022, while the match between Thwili Thwala and champions Mamelodi Sundowns was abandoned due to a waterlogged pitch.

All Saturday results:

Kaizer Chiefs 2-2 Swallows

Maritzburg 1-0 Baroka

Stellenbosch 1-0 CT City

Gallants 2-1 Sekhukhune

Chippa 0-1 Galaxy

AmaZulu 1-1 Arrows (match abandoned in the 75th minute)

Royal AM 0-0 Sundowns (game abandoned in the 24th minute)

  • Orlando Pirates still have three games in hand and could climb up to 49 points, which would likely see them move into third spot and clinch the final CAF competition spot, unless they would even outdo Cape Town City in terms of goal difference. Pirates will face Maritzburg (24 May), Royal AM (27 May) and SuperSport (30 May). To overtake City, Bucs would need collect three points and a +4 goal difference.
  • Royal AM could also still overtake those ahead of them on the log and finish in second place, should they get at least three points from their matches against Downs or Pirates.
