The South African Police Service (SAPS), in collaboration with Airports Company South Africa (ACSA), has intensified its crackdown on narcotics at OR Tambo International Airport.
On 27 April, acting on intelligence regarding traffickers destined for Frankfurt and London, officers intercepted a 66-year-old Somali national carrying a Dutch passport.
A search of his luggage revealed 55kg of khat, valued at approximately R100,000.
Earlier that same day, authorities discovered an abandoned suitcase containing a further 45kg of khat, worth roughly R90,000. These incidents followed the arrest of a 33-year-old South African woman on 25 April.
The suspect, who was bound for Hong Kong, was found in possession of cocaine and crystal methamphetamine estimated to be worth more than R500,000.
All individuals apprehended during this three-day period face charges of drug trafficking and are scheduled to appear before the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court shortly.
SAPS confirmed that investigations remain ongoing as they work to dismantle the broader smuggling networks involved.
