In a move that’s sent shockwaves through the netball world, World Netball has suspended Cecilia Molokwane, the president of both Netball South Africa (NSA) and Africa Netball.
The reasons? Still unclear.
The international governing body hasn’t released any specific details behind the decision, leaving fans and officials alike wondering what exactly led to this major shakeup.
Driving force
Molokwane, 50, has been a driving force in South African netball since becoming NSA president in 2017.
Under her leadership, the Spar Proteas have climbed the world rankings, and South Africa even hosted the 2023 Netball World Cup in Cape Town – a highlight Molokwane has called a career-defining moment.
But not everything has been smooth behind the scenes.
Just before her suspension, Molokwane told SABC Sport that she planned to run for a third term as NSA president in 2025.
That raised some eyebrows, especially amid rumours she’s been sidelining anyone within NSA who might challenge her re-election bid.
Despite the controversy, Netball South Africa says they haven’t received official word on what the charges are, and are just as in the dark as everyone else.
In a brief statement, NSA said they wouldn’t comment further on the situation and urged the public to be patient as things unfold.
This is uncharted territory for South African netball.
Molokwane’s suspension could have major ripple effects – both on and off the court – as the sport navigates uncertain waters ahead of next year’s elections.
