  • Dr Mugwena Maluleke has been appointed as the acting Chairperson of the NSFAS Board following Dr Karen Stander’s sudden resignation.
  • The Department of Higher Education says the appointment ensures stability and continuity within the board.
  • Minister Manamela assured students that NSFAS operations remain unaffected, with 2026 funding applications still open.

The Minister of Higher Education and Training, Buti Manamela, on Monday appointed Dr Mugwena Maluleke as the acting Chairperson of the NSFAS Board.

This follows the immediate resignation of Dr Karen Stander, who reportedly stepped down from the institution amid allegations of bullying, intimidation, racism, and threats to her personal safety. Stander resigned from the institution last week.

Manamela’s spokesperson, Matsepo Seedat, says Maluleke’s appointment will ensure continuity and stability within the NSFAS Board.

ā€œThe NSFAS Board remains functional, and its core work continues uninterrupted,ā€ Seedat assured.

Dr Maluleke is a respected education and labour leader, currently serving as the Vice President of Education International, General Secretary of SADTU, and former council member of VUT and the Human Resource Development Council.

Minister Manamela said Maluleke’s leadership will help uphold governance standards, reinforce public trust, and guide NSFAS through this transitional phase.

ā€œThe functioning of NSFAS is not affected by the review process. Students can be assured that services are continuing. Applications for 2026 NSFAS funding remain open until 15 November 2025. I encourage all eligible students to apply now,ā€ said Minister Manamela.
