Downs Unlock Swallows In 2nd Half

Mamelodi Sundowns have extended their winning run to eight on trot after beating a resilient Swallows side.

The defending champions entered the game in fine form, having win their last seven league games in a row, while Swallows received new energy by the appointment of Ernst Middendorp – even though the Dube Birds lost the first game under the German tactician against Richards Bay.

Williams was called into action by a superb header from Kwandakwensizwa Mngonyama in the 18th minute but managed to push the ball around the post.

Downs struggled to break down Swallows defence, with Themba Zwane having the best chance after fine interplay with Mailula but he sent his effort from the edge of the box over the bar.

The game continued in a similar mould, with Swallows focussing on keeping things tight at the back to hand the home side a tough outing.

However, Neo Maema eventually broke the deadlock in the 63rd minute with a strong left-footed finish past Thakasani Minenhle from inside the box.

Just four minutes later, in-form Themba Zwane made it 2-0 following nice interplay with Mailula.

Wassem Isaacs had a great chance to get Swallows on the scoresheets but his header in the 77th only hit the cross bar.

The win saw Sundowns move to 34 points on the log, seven ahead SuperSport United, who beat Cape Town City away from home earlier on Tuesday.
