Mamelodi Sundowns chairman Tlhopane Motsepe has sent a letter to Al Ahly after the bus incident ahead of their CAF Champions League game in South Africa, stating preliminary information shows their delay was caused by traffic jam.
Al Ahly had published a statement ahead of the match at FNB Stadium, saying “Mamelodi Sundowns’ fans stopped the bus carrying Al Ahly’s first team while en route to FNB Stadium”.
Sundowns initially responded on Sunday, stating they “initiated an investigation and has also contacted the South African Police Services to determine the facts and circumstances that resulted in the statement which appears on the Al Ahly website relating in the delay of the Al Ahly convoy at the FNB stadium by certain spectators”.
In their letter to Al Ahly president Mahmoud El Khatib, Downs indicated the delay was caused by traffic jam and highlighted they are keen on building a “historical relationship with Al Ahly”.

“I hope you and everyone at Al Ahly SC are keeping well.
“The preliminary information that we received, indicates that the delay was caused by a traffic jam on the road leading to FNB Stadium where spectators joined the Al Ahly convoy while it was traveling to the stadium.
“Sundowns has a duty and an obligation to ensure that Al Ahly is treated with the respect, courtesy, and dignity that it deserves.
“Mamelodi Sundowns is committed to maintaining and building its historical relationship with Al Ahly for the long-term benefit and growth of both clubs, their supporters, and African football.
“We wish you and Al Ahly everything of the best.
