The Al Ahly team bus was once again disrupted by Mamelodi Sundowns fans on their route to the FNB Stadium.
After the ugly scenes in Atteridgeville last year where a selection of Downs fans attacked the Al Ahly team bus and insulted coach Pitso Mosimane, South African fans again caused an incident on Al Ahly’s way to the stadium.
The scenes seemingly were not as severe as last year but Al Ahly officials had to leave the team bus before it had to take a different route to the stadium.
“Mamelodi Sundowns’ fans stopped the bus carrying Al Ahly’s first team while en route to FNB Stadium for the game against Mamelodi Sundowns, scheduled at 3:00 PM, in the fourth fixture of the CAF Champions League group stage,” a statement by Al Ahly read.
“The lack of organization and the shortage in the South African police officers, who are responsible to secure our journey to the stadium, caused a disruption.
“The head of our delegation to South Africa, Mohamed Shawky, the club’s board members, Hossam Ghaly and Tarek Kandil, and Sayed Abdelhafiz, the team’s director of football, had to leave the bus to talk with the South African officials to open the barriers to avoid any delay.
“In the end, our team had to take another route to the stadium, which forced us to arrive late ahead of this important game.”
Even coach Pitso Mosimane had to come off the bus to remove some security barriers so that the Al Ahly bus could take a different route.
