Dondol Stars Prioritise PSL Promotion

Dondol Stars head coach Vincent Rammoni has insisted his side’s main priority is to secure promotion from the ABC Motsepe League and not getting distracted by the club’s brilliant run in the Nedbank Cup.

Rammoni and his side have been a breath and fresh air in the cup of dreams this season, knocking out DStv Premiership sides SuperSport United and AmaZulu in the previous two rounds to set up a quarter-final with Orlando Pirates on the weekend.

It’s the fairytale story that many in South African football are craving but Rammoni has insisted his players need to remain and humble and grounded in order to not get distracted from their main target of the 2022/23 campaign.

“The priority is to win the league,” the Dondol coach said on Thursday.

“The priority is to win the league and go to the playoffs and get promoted.

“That is the biggest, biggest goal that we have and are targeting.

“How far we are going in the Nedbank Cup… obviously if the chances are there to win it, then we’re going to take them like others have done before.

“But one thing is… We have a good crop of quality players. It’s always easy for us as coaches to make changes, rest some players, bring in others because we believe that all the players that we’e signed this season can get the job done.

“We are not being fluke by what has happened in the Nedbank, we are still the very same team that started the 2022/23 ABC Motsepe League campaign with the very same objectives and we are relentlessly working on achieving our objectives.

“I believe that with the players we have more chances to go and get promoted. We just need to make sure that our players remain grounded as well and they still keep on going regardless of how tough and difficult it is.”

Dondol Stars are currently leading the Gauteng stream of the ABC Motsepe League, which also includes former Premier Soccer League giants likes Jomo Cosmos and Highlands Park. If they win their stream they will then fight for promotion at the national playoffs.

This week, though, they turn their focus on the Nedbank Cup, where they will face Pirates in the quarter-final on Saturday at 15:00.
