SAFA ABC Motsepe League side Dondol Stars are prepared to lose some of their star players following a dream run in the Nedbank Cup this year. “Chaba Re fete”, as they are known to their fans, were knocked out in the quarterfinals after losing on penalties to Orlando Pirates on Saturday.
DONDOL STARS PLAYERS IMPRESS DURING NEDBANK CUP
The Gauteng-based club caught the attention of many when they knocked out SuperSport United and AmaZulu in previous rounds.
Some of the players who have had some great displays include goalkeeper Sphamandla Gumede, Kamogelo Sambo, Francious Baloyi, and Thabang Mnyembane, amongst others.
The Nedbank Cup is also well known for unearthing new talent that breaks into the professional ranks.
MOTSEPE LEAGUE CLUB ADVOCATE FOR PLAYER DEVELOPMENT
Co-coach Khuliso Rashamuse says they won’t stand in the way of any player if an opportunity comes.
“Dondol Stars advocate for player development. We don’t stand in the way of players’ opportunities,” Rashamuse told the media.
“For example, you know Lesedi Kapinga is a Dondol Stars product, Senzo Nkwanyana [a Sekhukhune United player on loan at All Stars] is also a Dondol Stars product and a couple of other players.
“The Chairman [Ludwick Makhura] believes so much in developing and creating chances and giving people a better life and future in football. This tournament is mainly for that as well,” he said.
“If you play against SuperSport and you beat them 2-1, you go an extra mile with AmaZulu. Obviously, one or two or three players will be scouted, and that’s what we want. I as a coach, if Spha [Sphamandla Gumede, [Kamogelo] Sambo gets a contract or whoever, then I am happy I have done my job. I have developed a player for teams in South Africa or the national team.”
Meanwhile, the club will return to league action on Wednesday, 19 April. They are in pole position to win the Gauteng stream and qualify for the national promotion playoffs.
