DJ Maphorisa says amapiano stars face tougher competition than ever

DJ Maphorisa opens up on the challenges faced by Amapiano artists

DJ Maphorisa, one of South Africa’s most influential music producers, says the amapiano industry has become more competitive and demanding than ever before.

Speaking in a recent Metro FM interview, the hitmaker admitted that staying relevant in the fast-paced genre is no easy feat.

“It’s tough now, it’s not easy, it’s not like before,” he said.

“There’s too much competition, and people have short attention spans. They prefer one song from you and are fine with that song for about six months. But if you give them 10 hot songs, you won’t get a good reception.”

Maphorisa explained that this shift has forced artists to rethink how they release and market their music, with fans often gravitating to a single track instead of exploring full projects.

Using his latest album Ngomoya as an example, he revealed, “So far, I dropped like 28 songs, but they like one song.”
