DJ Maphorisa finally explains origin of Scorpion Kings name

DJ Maphorisa has set the record straight about the story behind the iconic name, Scorpion Kings.

In a recent Metro FM interview on 12 August 2025, the producer shared how he and his longtime collaborator Kabza De Small made their partnership official during their early days in the Amapiano wave.

“Kabza had a plan to drop an album. We had a few songs that were hot at the time, and I compiled a quick list and told them, ‘Let’s drop this and call it Scorpion Kings,’” Maphorisa explained.

The name, he revealed, came from his zodiac sign.

“I’m a Scorpio, but Kabza was born on the 26th of November (Sagittarius). I was just rushing through everything and didn’t give it much thought,” he admitted with a laugh.

Although astrology wasn’t exactly on their minds when they started out, the name stuck, and soon became synonymous with chart-topping hits and sold-out shows.

Since their first project, Scorpion Kings EP, the duo has grown into one of South Africa’s most celebrated musical exports.
