DJ Maphorisa calls out Nota Baloyi over unpaid ‘Ngud’ royalties

DJ Maphorisa demands ‘Ngud’ royalties from Nota after 10 years

What was meant to be a moment of celebration for outspoken music executive Nota Baloyi quickly turned into another public clash with DJ Maphorisa, after the producer used the occasion to reopen their long-running dispute over royalties.

The drama unfolded when Nota marked the 10-year anniversary of Ngud, Kwesta’s hit song featuring Cassper Nyovest.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Nota proudly shared the milestone, writing: “Released Ngud 10 years ago today.”

However, the celebratory post did not go unnoticed by DJ Maphorisa, who seized the opportunity to take a swipe at Nota.

Responding publicly, the acclaimed producer questioned when he would finally be paid for his role in creating the song, adding frustration to his message after years of waiting.

“Are you gonna pay me my royalties, yoh🙄 been waiting 10 years,” Maphorisa wrote, instantly reigniting debate online.

In the comment section, Baloyi fired back while attempting to explain why Maphorisa believes he is not owed payment.

His response mixed explanation with shade, referencing music sampling disputes and publishing claims that he says complicated the song’s ownership.

“You’re too young to forget you sampled Camino de Sol, and they claimed 100% of the publishing Alzheimer’s. Almost 10 years since One Dance, and you’re not even owed one cent on that. Add 49 cents, and I can explain for you as 50 told me, if they hate, then let them hate and watch the money pile up!” he wrote.

The exchange quickly gained traction; while some found humour in the ongoing back-and-forth between the two industry figures, others criticised the public nature of the dispute, questioning why long-standing royalty issues continue to play out online.

You’re too young to forget you sampled camino de sol & they claimed 100% of the publishing Alzheimer… Almost 10years since One Dance & you’re not even owe 1cent on that. Add 49cents & I can explain for you like 50 told me, if they hate then lettem hate & watch the money pile up!
