Kelly Smith – the mother of missing Saldanha Bay girl Joslin Smith – is accused of communicating a “secret message” through a language commonly used in prison.
The mother-of-three and her two co-accused were found guilty of kidnapping and child trafficking by the Western Cape High Court last week. They will be sentenced later this month.
Kelly is accused of being the “mastermind” behind the disappearance of her daughter. She is believed to have sold her child to fuel her drug habit.
KELLY SMITH CLIP RAISES SUSPICION
In various TikToks, conspiracy theorists have attempted to decipher Kelly Smith’s body language in court last week. Joslin’s mother is seated beside her co-accused, Steveno van Rhyn, and Jacquin “Boeta” Appollis.
During the clip, Kelly is seen making a strange hand signal by touching her nose and nodding to a person out of the camera’s view.
Many believe that Kelly Smith’s behaviour was “suspicious” and accused her of trying to signal or “send a message” to someone in court.
Some TikTokers believe that the mother of the missing girl used “Sabela language”- a secret dialect used in prison, particularly amongst the “numbers gang”. Others claimed she wanted to “warn” a court spectator to “keep quiet”

SENTENCING, HELD IN POLSMOOR PRISON
Meanwhile, Western Cape High Court Judge Nathan will hear the sentencing proceedings of Kelly Smith, Steveno van Rhyn, and Jacquin “Boeta” Appollis between 27 and 29 May.
The trio will remain in Pollsmoor Prison until then.
