There were big wins for Bayern, Real and Liverpool as matchday one of the Uefa Champions League got underway on Tuesday.
Harry Kane was the star of the night as the England captain netted four times in Bayern Munich’s 9-2 thumping of Dinamo Zagreb at the Allianz Arena. The striker scored three penalties — the first time a player has ever done so in a single Champions League game.
Defending champions Real Madrid were 3-1 victors over Stuttgart, with Kylian Mbappe, Antonio Rudiger and 18-year-old Endrick all making their way onto the scoresheet.
Over at the San Siro, Liverpool looked troubled early on as Christian Pulisic put the hosts ahead after just three minutes.
Celebrating his birthday, the tide would soon turn in favour of Reds boss Arne Slot — whose side reacted in style with two set-piece goals before the break.
The centre back pairing of Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate both found the back of the net as full backs Trent Alexander Arnold and Kostas Tsimikas got the assists.
In the second half, Cody Gakpo ran through the Milan defence to set-up Dominik Szobozslai for the third, as the English giants put the icing on the cake of a strong start to their campaign.
The night began as Aston Villa returned to the big time Unai Emery’s troops beat Young Boys 3-0 to make for the perfect start to their continental run.
Elsewhere, Juventus defeated PSV 3-1 while Sporting were 2-0 winners over Lille.
On Wednesday, PSG take on Girona while Borussia Dortmund travel to Club Bruges and Manchester City face Inter.
