Banyana Banyana mentor Desiree Ellis is hoping her charges display an improved performance on Monday evening when they face Brazil for the second time in three days.
Due to mistakes and errors during the match, the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations champions -Banyana – were outclassed 3-0 on Friday evening at Orlando Stadium.
“I felt that for the first 30 minutes, we were tactically disciplined, and we were organized. But at this professional level, you have to stay concentrated for the duration of the game. In the most critical moments of the game, just before half-time, we were not technically disciplined,” Ellis told SAFA media.
“I thought our ball in the final third should have been much better. If it had been better, we would have been on goal more times.”
Banyana are facing Brazil for the second time in three days. They are preparing for the 2023 Women’s FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by New Zealand and Australia.
Therefore, Banyana mentor, Ellis, described the two matches as preparatory matches than friendly.
“It’s not really an international friendly; it’s a preparation match. Brazil is a top team, and they are preparing well.”
“They went through Copa America without conceding a goal, and that shows the quality they bring. I still believe we gave as good as they gave.”
The 59-year-old further warned Banyana players to take such preparatory games seriously. These games will be used to select the squad that will represent the nation at the World Cup.
“It is an opportunity for us to change players. It’s an opportunity for players to raise their hands because the World Cup squad is not chosen yet. If you can raise your hand, then, of course, you have a tick next to your name,” Ellis added.
