  • The attack took place outside the school gate in Daveyton, Ekurhuleni, as the deputy principal was arriving on Friday morning.
  • The injured educator was rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention, while police launched an immediate investigation into the shooting.
  • The Gauteng Department of Education strongly condemned the “senseless act of violence” and deployed counselling teams to support learners and staff during NSC exams.

The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) has strongly condemned a shooting incident at Dinoto Technical Secondary School in Daveyton, Ekurhuleni, where the deputy principal was shot this morning while entering the school premises.

According to preliminary reports from the GDE, the deputy principal was attacked just outside the school gate and sustained gunshot wounds.

He was immediately rushed to a local hospital where he is currently receiving urgent medical care.

Despite the distressing event, the school proceeded with the National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations under close supervision, a decision made to minimise disruption for the pupils.

The GDE has deployed psychosocial support teams, including officials from the Ekurhuleni North District, to the school to offer counselling to traumatised educators, learners, and staff.

Education MEC Matome Chiloane expressed outrage, stating that schools must not be places of fear.

“We are deeply shocked by this incident. Schools are meant to be safe spaces for both learners and educators. The Department condemns this senseless act of violence in the strongest possible terms,” Chiloane said.

The MEC extended his well wishes for a full and speedy recovery to the injured educator and urged law enforcement authorities to swiftly investigate the circumstances and bring the perpetrators to justice.

Police have officially launched an investigation into the matter.
