The Department of Correctional Services is investigating the death of two inmates at Tswelopele Correctional centre in Kimberly.
It’s understood that three inmates attacked a prison official with padlocks.
When officials tried to intervene, a scuffle with prisoners ensued and three inmates were injured.
They were referred to an outside hospital, where two of them died.
The other prisoner is in hospital receiving treatment.
The South African Police Service and the Judicial Inspectorate for Correctional Services have both been informed.
A full investigation into what happened is underway.
