Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Denis Onyango will grace testimonial matches for former Golden Arrows midfielder Tonny Mawejje back home in Uganda.

The testimonial games for the former Cranes captain Mawejje will take place on September 14 and September 16 2022 in Ugandan capital Kampala, according to Onyango.

The matches will see the Cranes AFCON class of 2017, including Onyango, lining up against the current Uganda national football team squad.

“I am calling upon all Ugandans, all football lovers to come and support a brother, a captain, a former national team player shirt number 6 Tony Mawejje as he plays his testimonial game on 14th September at Philip Omondi Stadium in Lugogo and on 16th September at Recreation Ground at Musaka. I will make my way down to Kampala to support this initiative and his academy,” Onyango said.

The former KCCA midfielder has said proceeds from the testimonial will be used as a start-up capital for the establishment of his football academy.

The academy will be established in Kampala with a branch in Musaka.

The testimonial will close the curtain on Mawejje’s career spanning 20 years during which time he also played for URA and Police FC.

The 35-year-old launched his career at Masaka Local Council FC in 2004 then signed for Kampala City Council FC.

Two years later, he signed for Uganda Police FC then moved to Uganda Revenue Authority in 2018.

The 2017 AFCON member went on to play in Iceland at Vestmannaejar FC between 2009 and 2013.

Mawejje soon returned to Africa where he spent a spell at Golden Arrows for a loan spell in 2012.

An elegant midfielder able to break attacks and initiative the same, Mawejje earned 83 caps and scored eight goals.

The midfielder helped Uganda to return to the 2017 AFCON finals for the first time in 38 years.

Just like Mawejje, Onyango, too, had a colourful career with Uganda.

The keeper played for the Cranes until last year when he called it time after the Cranes had lost 1-0 in Blantyre to Malawi to miss out on the 2021 AFCON qualification.
