Dan ‘Dance’ Malesela identifies Kaizer Chiefs’ defensive weakness

Former Chippa United head coach Dan “Dance” Malesela has advised Kaizer Chiefs to bring in a new centre-back.

Amakhosi currently have Miguel Inacio, Zitha Kwinika, Aden McCarthy, Rushwin Dortley and Given Msimango at the back.

With Miguel and McCarthy being used as the main pairing, Kwinika has mostly been a backup, but he has impressed whenever he was given a start.

Malesela feels a new quality defender is needed at the club to stop goals from leaking.

“Additionally, addressing the centre-back position is important,” said the former Orlando Pirates star.

Often, conceded goals stem from issues in this area. Inacio Miguel receives frequent bookings, which raises concerns about safety. A reliable backup is necessary, and Aiden McCarthy still needs to get acclimated to the PSL,” Malesela told KickOff.

Given Msimango enjoyed his first season at Chiefs and was given the armband. Under Nasreddine Nabi and Ben Youssef, the ex-TS Galaxy skipper has struggled for gametime.

Malesela explained why Kaizer Chiefs have not played Msimango this season.

“Regarding Given Msimango, I understand that coaches sometimes have their own preferences. It’s possible he isn’t their first choice in training, but honestly, his partnership with McCarthy may not be my first option. At centre-back, leadership is crucial—someone to take charge and organise the defence. Vocality in the field helps ensure coordination.

“I am not entirely sure about how vocal Given is, but from our time at TS Galaxy, I know he is a quiet person. Having someone who can lead and organise is essential to a solid defensive unit.”

Kaizer Chiefs are in action on Tuesday (20 January) against Golden Arrows at the FNB Stadium.
