DA vows to regain control of City of Joburg

Ousted Johannesburg mayor Mpho Phalatse says she won’t go down without a fight.

This after she was unseated through an ANC-driven motion of no confidence.

She’s been replaced by Dada Morero, but the Democratic Alliance says it will deal with what it calls an unlawful takeover.

DA leader John Steenhuisen blames political parties in the multi-party coalition for collapsing the partnership.

He says Phalatse has been targeted and that they will fight back to regain control of the metro.

“Mayor Mpho Phalatse has been the target of a coordinated attack, not because she has done anything wrong, but because she has done everything right,” Steenhuisen said.

“We have always had, and still do have, the utmost confidence in Mpho Phalatse.”

In accepting the job, Morero says he’ll prioritize service delivery and the energy crisis.

“Joburg cannot continue to function in darkness. When we have the experience of resolving this problem and integrate new energy generation and energy storage facilities into the energy base,” he said.

Council is expected to convene soon to table other reports looking into service delivery.
