The Democratic Alliance (DA) has called on President Cyril Ramaphosa to end all COVID-19 lockdown restrictions as well as the National State of Disaster.

On 23rd of March, it will be two years since South Africa entered a hard lockdown to prepare for the Covid-19 pandemic, hitting the country’s economy hard.

Government has relied on the Covid regulations to introduce and give effect to lockdown restrictions, as well as to curb the spread of the virus.

The DA says the National State of Disaster continues to give government wide-ranging powers over the lives of citizens, with few limits and little to no oversight from parliament.

The party’s leader John Steenhuisen says since then, thousands of people have lost their jobs, livelihoods destroyed, school and university days missed, and billions of rands have been lost to tax revenue, which could have gone to poverty relief.
