South African rapper Da L.E.S has been moved to a public hospital in Johannesburg after initially receiving treatment at a private hospital.

His mother, Priscilla Mampe, came from the US to care for him and reportedly asked for donations to pay his medical bills.

Other reports suggest it was his friends who sent out a letter asking for money to help pay the bills.

The 39-year-old artist, whose real name is Leslie Mampe, missed his celebration party and is now in stable condition at the public hospital.

A friend told Zimoja about Da L.E.S’s condition, saying he is battling a stroke but showing a fighting spirit.

The friend also said donations are needed, speaking about Da L.E.S’s big impact on South Africa’s entertainment industry.

“He is not okay, but it is not my place or any of my friends to say what is wrong. His eyes are showing a fighting spirit,” the friend said.

“Da L.E.S contributed a lot to the country’s entertainment business, and it is a sign of ubuntu to donate when someone is ill.”
