The ANC, EFF and Patriotic Alliance (PA) support the motion of no confidence. News24 reported that a smaller party, which helped elect Odendaal, appears to have switched alliances.

As has been the case in hung Gauteng metros, a mayor from one of the smaller parties in the election is likely to replace Odendaal.

DA Rallies Behind Odendaal

In response to the imminent ousting, the DA is holding a #HandsOffMayorRetiefOdendaal Rally at Vuyisile Mini Square in Gqeberha on Saturday, 20 May.

Odendaal will lead the rally, and DA Federal Council Chairperson Helen Zille is also expected to be in attendance.

In a statement, the Blue Party referred to the motion of no confidence as frivolous. “They are seeing their opportunities to loot and steal slip away. This motion is a last desperate attempt to get control of the city’s coffers.”
