  • An overloaded scholar transport vehicle was involved in a devastating crash in Vanderbijlpark that killed 13 primary school pupils.
  • The minibus, which was carrying 18 people instead of the permitted 14, allegedly collided with a truck while overtaking on the freeway.
  • A culpable homicide case has been opened as four injured learners continue to receive medical care.

Authorities have confirmed that the scholar transport vehicle involved in Monday’s tragic accident that claimed the lives of 13 primary school pupils in Vanderbijlpark was overloaded.

The minibus, which was carrying 18 occupants including the driver, is legally permitted to transport only 14 people.

According to preliminary information, the vehicle collided with a truck on the freeway after allegedly attempting to overtake while ferrying learners to school.

11 pupils died on the scene, while four others sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment in hospital.

Gauteng police spokesperson Mavela Masondo confirmed that a case of culpable homicide has been opened. It has also emerged that the driver had reportedly been issued with a warning for negligent driving just last week.

Authorities remain on the scene as investigations continue.

Meanwhile, an outpouring of condolences has come from various sectors of society, including political leaders, as the tragedy has left the community in deep shock.

Parents of the deceased children have been at the scene since early morning and are expected to formally identify their children once the area has been cleared.
