A Khayelitsha woman was sentenced in the Western Cape High Court for conspiracy to commit murder after hiring hitmen to kill her husband.

Patience Kwaza, 42, Loyiso Ludidi, 36, Thando Chwayi, 26, and Sivuyile Shasha, 41, were found guilty of murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, and defeating the ends of justice.

Kwaza hired men to carry out a hit on her husband, Pasika Kwaza, who was shot in the head and killed on June 23, 2016 in Kuyasa, Khayelitsha. The motive for the hit, according to the State, was to cash in on insurance and pension benefits.

The State was able to persuade the court that Kwaza had enlisted Chwayi’s assistance in having her husband executed.

He then hired Shasha, who enlisted Ludidi’s assistance. Chwayi received payment from Kwaza after pointing out the Kwaza home to the two hitmen.

They planned a robbery as part of their plan to cover up the murder. According to the State, Shasha and Ludidi entered Kwaza’s home armed with firearms and demanded the Kwazas’ possessions while threatening them. They then shot Pasika in the head and stole his cellphone.

Patience was sentenced to 12 years and 18 months in prison for her role in the conspiracy and her subsequent false statement to police.

Ludidi and Shasha were also sentenced to 15 years in prison for aggravated robbery, three years in prison for illegal firearm possession, and 18 months in prison for ammunition possession. The sentences will run alongside the life sentences.
