Mandla Nkambule, founder of the Ekurhuleni Thathazonke and Yizoyizo Anti-Crime Unit, was shot and killed by unknown attackers while driving in Katlehong, near a Sasol garage, on Wednesday afternoon.
It is reported that the attackers in a VW Polo GTI fired several shots at him before speeding away.
SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Mavela Masondo said: “At around 5.30pm, the victim was driving in Katlehong when suspects in a car beside him opened fire. He lost control of his car, crashed into a fence, and was declared dead at the scene.
“We are asking anyone with information that could help us find the suspects to contact the nearest police station or call Crime Stop on 08600 10111.”
Nkambule, a former police officer, was known for helping his community fight crime and drug abuse. Many local crime-fighting groups have come together to find the killers.
A private investigation firm, Tshenolo PI, is offering a R10,000 reward for information that helps identify the killers.
Commander Bush, a member of Thathazonke, said Nkambule started the anti-crime unit in 2002.
“He was the first commander and led all operations. He always told us to follow the rules,” he said.
“Very few people did what Mandla did for this community without being paid. We know his death is connected to his work of fighting crime. We understand the risk every day we leave our homes.”
