The head of the Ekurhuleni metro police, Isaac Mapiyeye, has been given two more weeks to prepare his defence against a protection order filed against him.
The case was postponed by the Brakpan Magistrate’s Court to 4 October, when the victim—a 40-year-old metro police officer—will present her evidence.
During the court session, the victim’s lawyer suggested that both sides attempt to resolve the issue before the hearing to ease the victim’s fears.
In her police report, the victim asked for protection from any possible intimidation or harassment by Mapiyeye.
She was granted a temporary protection order on 9 September, which prevents Mapiyeye from contacting her until the court makes its final decision.
The victim’s police statement alleges that Mapiyeye first sexually harassed her in October 2023.
She claims that after refusing to sleep with him in exchange for a job promotion, the harassment continued.
She filed a complaint of sexual harassment and intimidation on 4 July this year and later informed the department’s head to avoid contact with Mapiyeye.
The victim, suffering from depression and anxiety, is currently in hospital.
City of Ekurhuleni spokesperson Zweli Dlamini confirmed that Mapiyeye is still working and the city manager, Imogen Mashazi, is handling the case according to the council’s recommendations.
