UDM councillor Lindiswa Gcilitshana from the OR Tambo municipality in Mthatha is fighting with a family over an RDP house they accuse her of occupying illegally.

Scrolla.Africa learned that the relatives involved left the house a long time ago, and one of the siblings put it up for sale, which Gcilitshana then bought.

A community member who wanted to remain anonymous said that a street committee gave Gcilitshana an eviction notice, but she has continued to stay in the house.

“They claim she has been living in the RDP house illegally for some time. The fight over this house is very serious, and we don’t know how it will end.”

Gcilitshana asked her lawyer, Thanduxolo Qin, SC, to respond.

“I never received the letter they claim was served to me,” she said. “When I came to this house, no one was living in it. I am a South African citizen with the right to a house.

“If I’m kicked out of this house, where will I go? This is my only home.”

Qina said: “Tell those people that we cannot comment on the court case while it is still ongoing. We will comment once the court has made its decision.”
