COSAS shut down schools in Katlehong

On Thursday 21, 2022, teaching and learning have come to a standstill in Katlehong as the Congress of South African Students embarked on a local strike to address inequality amongst learners.

Schools that were affected was Lethukuthula Secondary School, Katlehong Secondary School, KwaDukathole Secondary School and many other schools in Katlehong.

Although the grievances of the learners are not clear at this stage, it is alleged that the strike has been ongoing since Monday.

A source that did not want to be name, informed the publication that the COSAS leaders were not Onsight as the disruptions occurred.

“We haven’t seen any of the leaders as yet and we are not clear as to what the problem is, we hear different stories from these learners, but nothing is concrete”

A bystander who was watching as the learners were being rowdy outside Lethukuthula Secondary School gate said that these learners were wasting their future on unnecessary thing.

“They are busy disrupting school instead of being in class and learning, next thing teenage pregnancy will be high in our schools, and most will fail grades and still continue to strike.”

In January Douglas Ngobeni, COSAS spokesperson issued a statement on concerns of inequality in the education system.  COSAS says the quality of education should not be determined by where learners go to school. This comes as many learners continue to struggle to access better education closer to where they live.

“Because whether urban or rural we use a universal curriculum, the only time we can respond to the quality of education in South Africa is if we have a career-orientated curriculum which speaks to our daily challenges as the young people. Because every now and then we just change the name of the curriculum, not the content.” Said Ngobeni
