The Gwanxu family in Samora Machel, Cape Town, wants to know what happened to their son, Yanga.
A family member who didn’t want to be named said Yanga, 25, was drinking on 15 July and became angry and disruptive,
He argued with his mother, and when his father slapped him, he started breaking windows in the house.
The family called the police for help, and they took Yanga away. They thought he would be kept in a cell until he sobered up.
At around 9pm on the same day, a community member told the family they saw Yanga struggling to walk along the road.
Yanga’s father brought him home, but on the following day, they found him dead in his room.
The family saw burn marks on his hands and feet and thought he had been tasered.
They want the police to explain what they did to Yanga.
Western Cape SAPS spokesperson Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi said: “The police took Yanga away when he became unruly. They couldn’t keep him in a cell because the family didn’t file a formal complaint.”
The police have opened an inquest docket to investigate his death.
