A shootout between police and suspects in Milnerton, Cape Town, on Thursday evening saw four suspects killed and four others injured.

Western Cape SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Novela Potelwa said the incident happened during a police operation targeting suspected extortionists.

“The suspects were in a minibus when the shootout happened,” said Potelwa.

“Four suspects were shot dead. The injured suspects, aged between 23 and 38, are from Cape Town and are now under police guard in hospital. Police also found four firearms and ammunition in the suspects’ vehicle.”

The officers were following the suspects’ vehicle when they started shooting, and the police fired back.

A similar incident happened a few weeks ago in Khayelitsha, where eight suspects were killed in a shootout with police.

Mawandile Ngonjana, a 50-year-old Cape Town resident, said he was glad no police officers were killed.

“I heard the suspects were planning to shoot people, but our officers stopped them. I’m happy with how they handled it,” said Ngonjana.

Another resident said: “We used to hear about police shooting suspects in KZN, but now it’s happening here too. If KZN officers are here, it’s a good thing because we’re seeing positive results.

“As long as police officers aren’t losing their lives, it’s good. We’ve lost enough officers to criminals. If the police have a chance, they should fight back.”
