A shootout on Tuesday on the N1 highway in Cape Town left two suspected extortionists dead and one injured.
The Provincial Organised Crime Unit is now investigating charges of attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearms, and possession of a hijacked vehicle.
Western Cape police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm Pojie said a team of officers, with information about suspects extorting payments from businesses, had been following a vehicle with three occupants. When the suspects noticed they were being followed, they opened fire on the police.
A gunfight broke out on the N1 near the Sable Road off-ramp, resulting in two of the suspects being killed and the third seriously wounded. He was taken to hospital.
Police seized three firearms from the vehicle, and preliminary investigations revealed the car had been hijacked in Thornton a few days earlier. Investigations are ongoing to identify the deceased suspects.
Cape Town resident Thobile Mntonga said he was happy that no police officers were injured.
“When it comes to extortionists, I don’t feel sorry when they are killed because they have been killing people for their money. Now the tables have changed. They are also being killed,” he said.
