Gauteng police have busted a factory producing counterfeit goods.
Five suspects were arrested for running the illegal operation, which manufactured fake Hamburg tea, Gold Star instant yeast, and synthetic hair.
The police seized products and machinery valued at approximately R2.5-million.
Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Thatohatsi Mavimbela said the plant was discovered after an operation on Thursday at a plot in Bredell, Kempton Park.
“A multidisciplinary team confiscated counterfeit goods and machinery worth an estimated R2.5-million,” said Mavimbela.
“The authorities pounced on a plot in Kempton Park which was used as a warehouse that manufactured various counterfeit goods, including sanitary pads, Hamburg tea, Gold Star instant yeast, and synthetic hair.”
Further investigations led officers to a shop in Boksburg, where five suspects, aged between 20 and 30, were arrested while delivering the fake products to various shops in the area.
“The five suspects are expected to appear in the Palm Ridge Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on Monday, 2 September, for the contravention of section 2 of the Counterfeit Goods Act 37 of 1997. Investigations are continuing,” said Mavimbela.
