Malusi Booi, a former City of Cape Town official in charge of human settlements, was one of eight people arrested by the Western Cape Police commercial crimes unit for fraud and corruption.
The SAPS Anti-Gang Unit worked with investigators on the case.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Novela Potelwa said the arrests were part of a lengthy investigation into fraud and corruption in the City of Cape Town’s Human Settlements Directorate.
Booi was arrested in the Eastern Cape on Monday evening.
The investigation started in March 2023 when police searched the City of Cape Town offices.
On Tuesday, three more suspects were arrested in Johannesburg, and later that day, four others were arrested in Cape Town.
They are facing money laundering, corruption, racketeering, and fraud charges. All eight were set to appear in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
‘These arrests are a big step forward in the investigation,’ Potelwa said, adding that more arrests could happen.
The City of Cape Town said it was ‘aware of the arrest and has been supporting the police investigation. We will follow the court proceedings.’
A resident, Xolelwa Klass, shared her frustration at corrupt politicians on hearing the news.
‘I don’t care which political party they’re from. This just proves that all politicians are the same – some get caught, and some don’t,’ Klass said.
