After a week of living in fear for his life, pensioner William Masumpa was strangled to death with cable ties in his bed by unknown killers on Tuesday night.
In the week leading up to his death, the 78-year-old complained to his family about unknown men following him.
In an interview with Scrolla.Africa, Masumpa’s wife, Tinah Masumpa, 74, said her husband used to fear walking out of the yard as people were following him.
“I asked him if he owed anyone, and he said no, he paid off all his loans and had no enemies.
“On Monday night, men came into the yard and greeted my husband while he was in the kitchen and left without saying anything.”
It is alleged three armed suspects returned the following night; one ordered Masumpa’s daughter to remain in the living room.
The two other suspects went to the pensioner’s room where he was sleeping and strangled him with cable ties, cutting through his flesh until he took his last breath.
They left his room and told the suspect in the living room with Masumpa’s daughter that they were done. The three then fled.
Ekurhuleni police spokesperson Captain Nelda Sekgobela said Duduza police are investigating a murder case.
The 43-year-old daughter was arrested and will appear before the Nigel Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 5 September.
A close relative of the family who did not want to be named alleged that the daughter was in financial difficulty and had ordered the hit on her father to claim his insurance money.
Masumpa’s daughter moved in with him last year after failing to pay the bond for her house.
His brother, Vuyisile Masumpa, said all the family wants is for whoever is responsible for the gruesome murder to pay for the crime.
“If it’s his daughter who ordered the hit, she must face the law like any other criminal.
“The suspects were heartless; they inflicted so much pain on my brother to the point that they cut his throat. Why didn’t they just shoot him to make it less painful?”
