A police officer is among five suspects arrested following an ATM bombing incident in the North West.
Police fatally shot three suspects linked to the crime during a confrontation in Mahikeng.
The arrests stem from an ATM bombing reported in the early hours of Wednesday morning, 06 May 2026, in Dinokana, Zeerust. A multidisciplinary operation tracked the suspects to Magogae Village in Mmabatho, where a shootout ensued, leaving three suspects dead.
“The arrests follow a multidisciplinary operation that tracked the suspects, leading to a confrontation between police and the suspects. During the shootout, three suspects were fatally wounded,” said police spokesperson Adéle Myburgh.
Major General Ryno Naidoo welcomed the swift arrests, highlighting the coordination and dedication of the teams involved.
At the same time, Naidoo strongly condemned the alleged involvement of a police officer in the crime.
“The actions of any member of the SAPS who engages in criminality are a betrayal of the oath to serve and protect. Such conduct will not be tolerated, and those found on the wrong side of the law will face the full might of the law,” he said.
The suspects are expected to appear in court soon, facing charges related to ATM bombing, possession of explosives, and other related offences.
Police have confirmed that efforts are ongoing to track additional suspects linked to the case.
