  • Witness E told the Madlanga Commission that Senzo Mchunu ordered him to lie and testify in the minister’s favour.
  • Audio recordings played before the commission show Mchunu instructing the witness to share his statement before testifying at the Madlanga Commission.
  • The witness claims Mchunu was persistent in trying to link the task team to the assassination of Sindiso Magaqa.

A new witness who took the stand at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry on Monday says the embattled Police Minister Senzo Mchunu ordered him to lie during his testimony.

A cellphone conversation between Mchunu and Witness E, who is currently under witness protection, was played before the commission, where Mchunu can be heard instructing the witness to send his testimony to a man named Lindo Mthembu.

Witness E alleges that in the latest calls from Mchunu, the minister attempted to coerce him into testifying before the commission in his favour.

In the audio that was played, Witness E can be heard immediately promising the minister that he is working on the statement Mchunu had asked for.

The entire conversation is in isiZulu, with the controversial minister heard asking whether the witness is done with his statement, further instructing him to send it to a certain man once completed.

The commission also heard how Mchunu allegedly went out of his way to look for information that could discredit the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT), which he disbanded in December 2024.

Witness E testified that the minister, who is currently on special leave, asked him to look for reports or victims that were not in favour of the PKTT.

Following Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi’s July 2025 media briefing, Mchunu allegedly told Witness E to prepare to testify about how the PKTT’s firearms and stolen vehicles were linked to the assassination of ANC councillor Sindiso Magaqa.

The police minister was allegedly very persistent in trying to find dirt on the PKTT.
