South African motorists can breathe a sigh of relief after the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) announced a decrease in fuel prices.

The price of 93-octane petrol will decrease by 58 cents per litre, while 95-octane petrol will be reduced by 72 cents per litre. Diesel prices will drop by 83.8 cents and 85.8 cents per litre, respectively. Additionally, the retail price of paraffin will decrease by R1.14 per litre, and the maximum retail price of LP gas will be reduced by 79 cents per kilogram.

Strong rand against the US Dollar sees fuel prices decrease

DMRE spokesperson Robert Maake said lower oil prices and a stronger rand against the US dollar are have contributed to the decrease of fuel prices for April.

“The average international petroleum product prices followed the decreasing trend of crude oil prices. This led to lower contributions to the Basic Fuel Prices of petrol, diesel and illuminating paraffin by 66.36 cents per litre (c/l), 80.10 c/l and 72.07 c/l respectively,” he said.

The good news

A big drop in fuel prices is a relief for cash-strapped motorists and consumers after the 12.75% electricity price hike on Tuesday.

For the third consecutive year, there will be no increase in the General Fuel Levy or the Road Accident Fund Levy, which are usually adjusted in April. However, the Treasury has announced a three-cent increase in carbon taxes on petrol and diesel.
